Ricardo E. Contreras is a Licensed Professional Counselor who specializes in working with children, teenagers, and adults struggling with anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, AD/HD, emotional regulation, and trauma. Ricardo has extensive experience successfully treating individuals who are ready to be engaged in therapy, actively participate, and who do not have the false assumption that therapy will "provide all the answers". Ricardo takes a client-centered approach in working with clients to create realistic goals and collaboratively take steps towards achieving those goals. Even before creating a plan Ricardo genuinely believes trust and rapport are the foundation of the therapeutic process and will work to establish this through honesty, genuineness, and transparency. Ricardo utilizes the most appropriate treatment to meet the client where they are and believes the therapy time is 100% for that individual. Since no 2 clients are alike he will collaboratively create a custom approach with his clients.
When working with adults Ricardo will take a comprehensive look at the individual's life story to identify natural supports, highlight strengths, and identify weaknesses. Ricardo works with his clients to identify unhealthy thinking patterns and teach skills to break from the negative thought loops. Ricardo may also utilize a more intensive technique to allow clients to dig deeper into their "subconscious roots" to desensitize past negative experiences and reprocess underlying negative self-views.
When working with children Ricardo wants the child to feel therapy is a safe place for them to be themselves. Ricardo will primarily work with the child to reduce impulsive behavior, understand their feelings, and manage strong emotions. Ricardo will interact with the parents to address the main concerns and provide factual, evidence-based research to families to educate them on mental health. Ricardo will update families on what skills are being taught in session to reinforce them in the home.
Ricardo received his undergraduate degree in Psychology from The University of Texas-Pan American in 2008 and his graduate degree in Professional Counseling from Texas Wesleyan University in 2015. Ricardo has been professionally employed in the mental health field since 2011. Ricardo utilizes evidence-based theoretical approaches in therapy and is trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), SFBT (Solution Focused Brief Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), TBRI (Trust-Based Relational Interviewing), Art Therapy, Play Therapy, and Sand Tray Therapy.
