What I want to change therapists?

I have come across a very popular question quite often in my career, "why did my previous therapist approach me this way and you don't?" That is an excellent question, and I wanted to share some thoughts. First, I love that question, it shows that you are looking after yourself and you deserve to have all the answers, especially when it's regarding your mental health...so please, ask all the questions!

One of many things to learn when you start your healing journey in therapy is that every therapist is different. Different doesn't mean that there are "right or wrong," ways of conducting therapy. It just means that we all come from different backgrounds and utilize different therapeutic models to help our clients achieve their goals and share their story. With that being said, since we all come from different models and backgrounds, we all do not approach therapy the same way.

Another common question we as therapist run into quite often is, What if I later want to try another therapist?" Though we love having you as a client; ultimately, this journey is about YOU. And only YOU can do what is best for YOU...even if that means moving on to another therapist that can better meet your needs.

I compare this question to the right every patient has to seek a second opinion. If you lack connection with your therapist, you have the right to seek someone else without feeling any sort of guilt. Now, I know that the feeling of guilt tends to be inevitable; therefore, I would like to reiterate: our mission is to help, even if it means helping you find another therapist. Always do what is right for you, we support your decision.
