Let's Talk About Goals

Often when we think of goals, we think of accomplishing some grand task. For some, achieving a goal may look like winning an olympic gold medal or being the first person to invent the newest piece of technology. However, we can set small goals each and every day! Now, this poses the question...where do I start?
There is a lot of information out there about SMART goals. This is an acronym to break down aspects of a goal to increase the likelihood that you will achieve the goals that you set for yourself.
S: Specific - This includes the Who, What, Where, Why, and Which. It helps to be clear on what it is that you want to achieve before you start. We cannot reach goals that are not specific! What is it that you want to accomplish? Why is this important to you? These are questions to begin the brainstorming process.
M: Measurable - Do you ever feel defeated and feel as though you're not getting far enough in your goal? This may be because you are losing motivation due to not having an ideal way to track your progress. We all have to start somewhere, and measuring your progress (even when it is baby steps) can be a great way to keep pushing yourself closer and closer to the finish line. Ask yourself: "How will I know when I have accomplished this goal?"
A: Achievable - We must set our goals to a realistic standard. By no means does this entail that we should set the bar low. Rather, our goals should stretch our abilities while still remaining possible. In order to find out what is achievable and what is not, we may need to ask the question: "What are my limitations?". Limitations may include our emotional, physical, time, and financial resources.
R: Relevant - For goals to be something worth pushing ourselves for, they must mean something to us and align with our values. Ask yourself: "Is this worthwhile? Is this the right time? Does this align with my value set?". Be cautious of procrastination and uncertainty clouding your judgement. Trust your gut!
T: Time-Bound - This part is all about accountability! Setting goals may sometimes mean shooting for a specific time to reach this goal in order to keep yourself on track. This gives us a deadline and something tangible to work toward. Ask yourself: "What can I do today? What can I do 6 weeks from now? Six months from now?". Think of it like small goal posts on the way to the bigger picture.
Goal are subjective. It means whatever you WANT it to mean. There is no right or wrong answer and there is no goal too big or too small. What's most important is that you start SOMEWHERE. We must be mindful of the barriers that get in our way, whether it be fear or thoughts of "I can't do it." To get past those barriers, we must give ourselves credit by focusing heavily on strengths. This strengths-based mindset derives from the core belief that every individual has something special and unique to offer. It helps us to grow in respect for ourselves as well as others. Ask yourself "What do I like about myself? What am I proud of? What am I good at?". The strengths that you uncover can be the very thing that motivates you to set off on the path towards your next goal.
